The art of creating objects out of paper was first developed by the Japanese people way back when kids had no toys to play with. The art was very popular centuries back and still thrives in schools and homes today.

In lieu of having real figures to play with, kids back then would learn to create their own using just a plain sheet of paper (or possibly a mixture of both). They obviously did not have the luxuries that kids have nowadays.

A great way to spend time with your kids is by teaching them how to do Origami and how to make their own toys out of simple paper. It is a very cheap past-time and is suitable for children of all ages. The other benefit is that learning this skill helps kids develop their finger dexterity as well as coordination.

For kids that do not like to draw or paint, it is an even better reason to get them onto Origami. The art of creating simple objects out of paper doesn’t require a lot of talent, although creating really complicated objects (for more advanced skill levels) can be quite challenging.

Find books on Origami for children, and your kids will have an extensive time following along with the simple diagrams described within the book, creating all sorts of toys that they can either play with or put on display.

Though following the guidelines shown, children will learn that they won’t be able to create the much more difficult examples shown in the book and in order to reach that stage, they have progress step by step.

It would be for the best if you joined in the fun and taught your kids how to fold these fun objects, as they would gain so much more if the experience was interactive. Show them slowly, one step at a time starting with very easy to make items such as a kite, or a basic flower, then progress from there. It would be beneficial to not help them make these items as that would just take away the self-satisfaction they would get upon finishing the project without your help.

Let your youngsters know that it takes dedication to turn good with paper folding just like everything else in their life, and perseverance is the key to making a wonderful paper toy. You will discover that youngsters get pleasure from learning what you will want to teach them, even though it means doing it over and over again.
